Egypt refuses to sign nuclear treaty — Egypt’s foreign minister on Saturday turned down a request from the world’s nuclear watchdog to sign the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, saying Israel should first join a separate agreement calling for a halt to the spread of atomic bombs.
The refusal by Israel to join the United Nations’ Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty has made the Middle East more insecure, Ahmed Aboul Gheit was quoted by Egypt’s semiofficial Middle East News Agency as saying.
“Egypt’s ratification of the [test ban] treaty is linked to the extent of developments that may occur in regional and international circumstances, including the possibility that Israel may join the NPT,” MENA quoted the minister as saying.
It amazes me the lack of courage some Arab/Muslim countries display when confronted with the Israel complex. Israel and Egypt have a modest “working relationship” and are at least not feuding like Syria, the Palestinians and Iran.
It must be imparted as courage on the part of Israel for them to disengage from their ancestral land knowing full-well that it left them vulnerable and boosting morale for their most immediate enemy, the Palestinians. The Egyptians, however, cannot claim the same level of courage on the part of their government. How disappointing.
