Establishing Permanent U.S. Bases in Iraq

I’ve discovered a new weblog that just might make my daily reading list. It looks promising. An interesting concept from Dan Morgan over at No Speed Bumps blog on permanent US Military bases in Iraq.

nospeedbumps.com | Putting U.S. Bases in Iraq — The U.S. needs to quietly begin establishing permanent bases in Iraq. In fact, this has already started. The strategy of having permanent bases worked incredibly well in Germany, Japan, and South Korea. All were undemocratic when we established the bases %u2013 and all are important, peaceful, and prosperous democratic countries today. The experiences in these countries also show that long term U.S. bases can be accepted by the local governments and populations.

I am coming to agree more and more that we’re going to have to maintain our presence through permanent bases in the Region. In order to compete with the swelling pimples that are Syria and Iran, we will need to have weight in the area. I think the conclusion he draws that wherever we have placed permanent bases (ie. South Korea, Germany, Japan), the economies and indeed the Countries have gone on to become more friendly towards the USA, the mixing of cultures over times blends and eases any clashes. The most notable element, which I cannot argue about is the countries’ economic success. South Korea, Japan and Germany are all heavily successful, vibrant economies with aggressive innovation, technology and noticeable growth.

So, as illustrated by the map (see article) with tyrants on all sides, it seems likely that Iraq will need help to establish themselvs as a nation emerging from a dark and stagnant past.
